It’s also a good idea to give the rubrail a thorough soaking with a hose, all the way around. (A bent or twisted rubrail often indicates a spot where the boat came into contact with something hard, like a piling, which probably stressed the joint). Try to get an eyeball on it wherever possible, especially if you see any abnormalities in the rubrail. Hull to Deck Joint Separation The hull to deck joint is obviously important, and just as obviously, you can’t usually see it in most or all of the boat. Then go down below, and check for any unexpected moisture. To see if any hatches, ports, or seams leak, take a hose and spray it full-blast at these potential leak spots. But not always, especially if the seller has done a thorough job cleaning the boat. Cabin Leaks Often, you can ID cabin leaks easily by seeing watermarks. Any visible damage or separation should be taken very, very seriously. You may need to wiggle into a tight hatch or duck into a smelly bilge, but do whatever it takes to get a good eyeball (aided by a powerful flashlight) on the stringers. Stringers The stringers are the backbone of the boat, and if they break or separate from the hull, serious trouble is in store. In the deck, a spongy or springy feeling underfoot tells you that rot has taken place. In the transom, lots of large cracks at the edges (a few small ones are almost always present) are a dead give-away of structural failure. Most commonly, this arises in the transom or deck coring. But you still see it sometimes, especially when looking at much older boats. Rot In truth, rot isn't nearly as common a problem as it once was, mostly because the vast majority of builders stopped using un-treated wood as a construction material many years ago. The give-away was the fact that even when unloaded, the boat's scuppers sat at the waterline instead of above it. The owner of this used boat unsuccessfully attempted to seal these deck cracks with resin water leaked through and saturated the foam in the hull. Tap on suspected saturated areas with a mallet, and you’ll hear a different tone than you will in dry areas of the boat. If you have a moisture meter and can check cored areas of the boat, so much the better. If the answer to any is no, you need to wonder why. Is it perfectly even? Are the scuppers well above the waterline? Does it sit nearly level, with the bow slightly up? Surely the boat was designed and built such that you’d answer yes to all of these questions. If at all possible, ask the owner to remove any heavy gear onboard and observe how the boat sits in the water. One way is simply by looking closely at the way the boat floats. Saturated Foam You can’t see this problem, but you can usually detect it. Obviously, you should also run washdowns, heads, and anything else that’s powered by a pump. Access the bilge and trigger it manually, to be sure. You may be able to flip a switch and make sure it runs, but that doesn't mean the float switch works. Also, take a general survey of the state of the wiring is it straight, well-loomed, and supported? Or, are you looking at a rat’s nest of wires that will make it nearly impossible to track down problems in the future? Failing Pumps What we’re most worried about here, of course, is bilge pumps. If you see an assortment of different brand fuses, indicating that some or many have been replaced, ask why (and if the problem was fixed). When you’re looking at a used boat, turn on each and every electrical item from lights to electronics, one at a time. Electrical Systems Few jobs are tougher than replacing the wiring on a boat, which often runs under decks, through tight chases, and into closed compartments. But most importantly, if you don’t know very much about engines bring along a friend who does, or better yet, get your mechanic to go along for the ride. Show up 15 minutes early for the sea trial, so the seller doesn't warm it up ahead of time. Listen to how smooth it sounds while running. Check the plugs to make sure they aren't encased in carbon. So pull the dip-stick and check the oil to make sure it’s in good condition and isn't milky (which indicates water in the oil). Buy a boat with a bad engine, and you’re in for a serious disaster. Engine Issues Naturally, these top the list. Hidden problems on a boat can ruin your investment - like a bad blige pump that sank this power catamaran at a dock in a marina.

While Soul Core abilities are very powerful, they’re kept in check by leaving you extremely vulnerable to follow-up attacks after use. Some of my favorites include the universally useful Enki spear throw, which remained my go-to ability when it came to dealing that extra bit of stamina damage required to stun an enemy Ippon-Datara’s simple hammer slam, which synergized with my magic build as it dealt more damage to scorched enemies and Ryomen Sukuna’s attack where he would spin forward with his fire and ice swords out, dealing both types of elemental damage at once. It’s an extremely cool addition in a number of ways: First off, it adds rare, exciting loot drops in a way Nioh 2’s equipment system desperately needs, since exotic weapons are dropped like candy it brings even more tension to the very act of staying alive since you drop your Soul Cores (along with your accumulated Amrita currency) when you die and most importantly, the moves you get from Soul Cores are fun to experiment with and offer a ton of variety in terms of how you’re able to approach different combat scenarios. That can be picked up, purified at a shrine, and then equipped to let you use their own move against your foes. Borrowing one of the best elements from Castlevania: Aria/Dawn of Sorrow, along with the more recent Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, enemies in Nioh 2 have a chance of dropping a Soul Core. The first and most substantial addition is the ability to use several equippable yokai skills. Nioh 2’s combat is the star of the show here, and like its predecessor, it is phenomenal. The only bright spot is the alternate-universe version of real-life Japanese historical figure Toyotomi Hideyoshi, as his journey from goofy adventurer to fearsome leader and his relationship with your character is actually quite compelling. Nioh 2 struggles with making its characters anything more than a means for exposition dumps. William was already basically a mute in the first game, so not much on that front is lost, and the character creator in Nioh 2 is amazing, allowing for some truly impressive looking protagonists.īut while the story fares better than the first, that’s still not a glowing endorsement. While Nioh put you in control of a fictionalized version of real-life sailor and Western Samurai (and professional Geralt of Rivia cosplayer), William Adams, Nioh 2 instead goes the route of the mute, custom-created character. Wake it up for the first time and you’ll see the home screen, with a task bar and search bar across the top, Library|Bookstore|Extras in the bottom left corner, and a cluster of tiles taking up the middle. The Aura H2O runs the same software as Kobo’s other ereaders, and it’s pretty good (if not for the ads). The frontlight is controlled either in the software menu or by swiping your finger up and down the screen near the left edge. I can confirm first hand that it was still very readable.Įdit: Just to be clear, the Aura H2O lacks the light button found on the Aura HD. In case you were wondering, the Aura H2O looks fuzzy in the last shot due to the dimmer frontlight. They range from full brightness down to 1%, and the Aura H2O is on the right. Just to show you how bright or dim the screens can be, here are 6 shots which compare the Aura HD and the Aura H2O. This is why I prefer the 1% setting on the frontlight on Kobo hardware over similar quality frontlights (like the one on the Onyx Boox t68 Lynx) which lack a low setting. Unlike LCD screens, where you will need the maximum brightness at some point, with E-ink screens you will more likely be interested in making the screen as dim as possible. While this might sound counter-intuitive, the most important setting on a frontlight on an E-ink screen is the lowest setting, not the highest. It offers an evenly lit white tone and is dimmer at its lowest setting than the frontlight on the Aura HD. While the Aura HD had a good frontlight, the Aura H2O has a better one. There are 4 images in this set, with the last one being a composite image made from a sample of white from each of the two screens. As you can see, there’s an obvious difference between the screens the Aura H2O has a much whiter screen. While I don’t have any photos comparing the PW2 with the Aura H2O (I had planned to take the photos today), I do have a set of photos that show the Aura HD (with a Pearl E-ink screen) next to the Aura H2O (with a Carta screen). That tint could be due to the frontlight, or it could be from the PW2’s capacitive touchscreen layer. They were ever so slightly slower than my 2013 Kindle Paperwhite, which I also noticed had a slightly brownish screen tint when compared to the Aura H2O. So far as I could tell they were about equally responsive, and turned the page equally fast. Those are essentially identical specs to the Aura HD, which could explain why the devices had similar performance when running similar firmwares.īack when I had a functional review unit, I set my Aura HD next to the loaner Aura H2O and compared their responsiveness and page turn speed. In general, the Aura H2O was nice to hold and to read on (more on this in a later section). The Aura H2O runs Kobo’s proprietary software on a 1GHz CPU with 256MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and Wifi. On the lower edge you’ll find that the microUSB port, microSD card slot, and reset button have been placed under a form-fitting rubber cap. Thanks to the waterproofing (and Kobo’s general trend to minimalism design) the Aura H2O has but a single button on the upper edge (power). Turning the device over, you’ll find that Kobo improved on the cheap plastic rear shell of the Aura HD they gave the Aura H2O a flatter and rubberized rear shell which makes it easier to grip and nicer to hold.Īside from the screen there aren’t many hardware details to notice. It has a screen resolution of 1,080 x 1,430, and on top of the screen you’ll find a frontlight and an IR touchscreen.Īround the screen you’ll find a matte black plastic bezel, which is just wide for a good grip. This device is the one and only ereader to sport a 6.8″ Carta E-ink screen. The first thing you’ll notice with the Kobo Aura H2O is the big beautiful screen. The microUSB port won’t accept any cable but its own.Review Date: 20 September 2014, with a review unit loaned from Kobo Pro & Con Pro By using Zapier, there are a few different convenient ways to automatically add emails to Todoist as a task. That's where integrating Todoist and Zapier comes in. Some of your tasks will end up in your email or calendar app. While Todoist is an awesome way to manage your to-do lists, it's hardly the only app you ever use.
